Hi. I love music.
Yet I've got a 16GB iPhone, filled mostly with pictures and apps and little room for my beloved music.
If you find yourself in the same boat as me, let me introduce you to a handy little app I like to call Cloud Music Player (well, I guess that's what everyone calls it).
First, let's make sure everyone knows what the "cloud" is.
The "cloud" is essentially a way for you to store your files over the internet on storage owned by the cloud service provider. As long as you've got an internet connection, you can both access and update your files, making those USB memory sticks a thing of the past.
What Cloud Music Player does is it lets you use these cloud storage lockers as places to store and play music easily. You can upload music to any of four big cloud services (SkyDrive, Box.com, Dropbox, and Google Drive) and CMP will play back your music like a pro.
Naturally, you're going to need an internet connection when playing music, and as long as you're not underground or way out in the sticks, your iPhone's 3G/4G connection will be fine.
Essentially, if you're using a cloud service to store your music, you don't need to keep a local copy on your phone, thereby freeing up a lot of storage on your phone.
Let's take a closer look at how it works:
We'll look at SkyDrive first, which offers you a generous 7GB of space for free. Assuming songs of about 3 minutes in length, this calculates out to about 1500 songs worth of storage.
Box.com sometimes has special offers for 50GB of free space, so be sure to take advantage of them when you see them.
Enter in your account info, sign in, then scroll to the bottom and tap the confirmation button.
Now your SkyDrive account has been connected and all you have to do is start uploading music to your account.
CMP even has repeat and shuffle options. It will load music continuously while you're playing so there's no gaps in playback.
CMP will even show the currently playing track on your phone's lockscreen, just like the regular iPhone music player. It won't, unfortunately, display the track's cover art...which may be good if you're listening to some potentially embarrassing anime music or something...
