Dragon Quest: Monsters Wanted is finally available for download from Google Play! Yay!!!
The payment system for the game is a bit unique (300 yen per month), but I intend to play the heck out of this game and get my money's worth, so no complaints here. So let's take a look at what could make a game warrant such an, ahem, substantial price!
Master all 3 aspects of the game to become a super hunter!
Dragon Quest: Monsters Wanted is divided into three distinct gameplay parts: the "quest" part where you hunt down and take out monsters, the "alchemy" part where you mix together ingredients to make items, and the "arena" part where you test the mettle of your monsters in battle.
You're free to proceed through the game as you see fit, but finding a good balance of all three parts of the game seems like the best way to go.
Your quest monsters are both brave and adorable!
The main job of your character is to control monsters, and you use your monsters to fight in battles. Adventuring and fighting all happens automatically, and if you win, your monster is rewarded with experience points.
You'll soon grow attached to the brave little monsters you send out on quests.
Every once in a while, you'll capture a monster you defeat in a quest, increasing the number of monsters you own. Don't forget to give them a cool name!
Use alchemy to make new weapons and armor!
Your monsters pick up various materials on their quests, which you can then use with alchemy to fashion new items. You'll need new and powerful items in order to tackle some of the harder quests.
As your alchemy rank increases, you'll be able to make even more powerful weapons.
Spar with heroes from around the world! Fight for victory in the arena!
In the arena, you can test the skills of your carefully raised monsters.
You can choose 3 of the monsters you own. Assign each of them a strategy, then it's off to fight!
You assign strategies, such as focus on attacking or defending, then let the monsters fight on their own.
Here's a battle screen any Dragon Quest fan will be familiar with.
Win battles in the arena to raise your battle rank, which then lets you send more monsters out on quests, increases the number of items you can equip, etc., to make you more powerful in the game.
Dragon Quest: Monsters Wanted manages to successfully merge the style and elements of the long-running Dragon Quest series with the ability to pick up and play the game in short bursts, something very important with smartphone games. It's gotta be good if you're going to be paying 300 yen a month to play, and luckily it makes a very strong case for such a high price.
