What's the deal with Japan and mushrooms? Why are apps (games, wallpaper, utilities, etc.) featuring mushrooms so popular over here? Sure, I like mushrooms as much as the next guy, maybe even more than your average person, yet I only regard them as something good to eat, and not as a protagonist in a video game.
Oh Japan, you land of unyielding strangeness. What's that, you say? You have a new puzzle app featuring a very sad-looking mushroom? Alright, let's take a look...
Here's Save Konchi, a recently released room escape (脱出, "dasshutsu") game starring the popular Konchi "character." Konchi is (evidently) popular with the ladies in Japan, and I'm not sure if that's because it looks like a penis, or in spite of it looking like a penis.
Not crying penises
So, uh, the basis of the game is there's a weeping Konchi trapped in a cage, and you have to figure out how to free the poor little guy.
Once again, let me remind you that Konchi is not a penis. It passed the notoriously strict Apple test, so there's no need to be embarrassed about wearing that new Konchi backpack you got for your birthday.
It's a mushroom. A pink mushroom.
There are a total of 7 areas. You have to beat each level before you can progress on to the next. Let me show you how the first couple levels work:
For the first stage, all you have to do is tap the cage and it pops open. Easy. And look at how happy Konchi is to be free. A happy Konchi makes everyone happy.
The stages gradually get harder and involve manipulating objects on screen in order to set the Konchi free. Try tapping different areas on screen to see if they can be interacted with. You may also need to tilt and shake your smartphone to figure some stages out, so remember to think outside the box.
The first couple stages are really easy and you may think that this game is too simple, but once you start getting into the mid-level stages, things get pretty real and some levels will definitely leave you scratching your head.
If you desperately need a hint, there's a button at the top right you can use, but where's the fun in that? Use your head and set that penis free.
