Snake has finally made his way onto the Android platform. It's been 25 years since the first installment in Konami and Kojima Productions' superfamous Metal Gear Solid series. MGS was an important game in establishing the ever-popular gaming genre of stealth action.
Dating back to its start on the MSX platform, MGS has made numerous appearances on plenty of platforms, and is finally available to enjoy on your smartphone. The title of the game is Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops and is a collaboration between Konami and popular mobile gaming company GREE (iOS version available here).
You don't need a GREE ID to play, so those of you a little hesitant of getting addicted to an online game can relax and enjoy yourself.
The game itself follows the tried-and-true card collection online game style, something GREE has plenty of experience in. The cards feature plenty of classic characters from throughout the history of the series.
The game's missions hearken back to stages in previous MGS games, something sure to make hardcore MGS fans happy. Although the fundamental gameplay is completely different from traditional MGS games, MGS:SO still conveys the thrill of sneaking around and being stealthy.
You spend AP to progress through each stage, at the end of which a boss awaits you. Gameplay progresses through simple taps on the screen, but the excellent graphics really put you in the middle of the action.
When you come upon a boss, you construct a deck from among the cards you have, and the ensuing battle happens automatically. While the action is completely computer-controlled, the CG effects are good enough that there is plenty to enjoy.
You get more cards during missions, and you can also get them through a gacha-gacha lottery system. Here, Snake picks up an MGS staple, the cardboard box, to uncover a special card.
"Touch Screen to Back," eh? You can control this game with your shoulder blades?
Find cardboard boxes, and you're treated to some nice animations and, if you're lucky, a super rare card. Snake loves his cardboard box, so make sure you find plenty for him to enjoy.
In addition to collecting and strengthening your cards, you can also upgrade your motherbase and assemble parts to make a Metal Gear, meaning there's plenty to do in the game. And of course, this being a social game, you're able to interact with your friends as well.
If you're interested, there's more info in the official trailer:
MGS:SO already has a ton of players even though it was released only recently. If you're the kind of player who is only interested in online games that have a large userbase, I wholeheartedly recommend Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops.
