Puzzle & Dragons, that hit app originally for iOS that made it big and recently topped 1.2 million downloads finally makes an appearance on the Android platform. I'm sure plenty of Android gamers have been waiting patiently for P&D to make the jump!
Let's take a look!
The game is a mix between a stacking combo puzzler with dungeon-style RPG gameplay mixed in. The dungeon shows up on the top part of the screen, and when you run into enemies, you make combos with the color blocks to attack, with different attacks depending on the size and color of the combo. Take a look at the video below for a better idea of how the fighting system works:
You level up by gathering monsters and experience points. It's got all the gameplay features you'd expect in order to keep those iPhone players coming back for more. I'll explain the 3 big reasons why P&D is such a big hit below:
- Real-time battles are fast and furious!
You head down a one-way path into the dungeon and monsters sporadically spring out at you. You have to try to make combos with the blocks that are the color the enemy is weak against. Because the battle is going on at real speed, this sounds easier than it really is.
At the end of each dungeon resides a boss who you must defeat in order to beat the dungeon. As the game progresses, the bosses get tougher so you have to put more thought into who to bring along on your team.
- Addictive monster collection system!
One of the best things about P&D is collecting monsters for your party. In addition to the partner dragon you choose at the beginning of the game, you also get monsters through eggs that are sometimes dropped when you defeat monsters, as well as through a lucky gumball machine-type dispenser.
There are a ton of monster types, plus a lot of rare characters that make it tough to catch them all. The collection system in P&D definitely adds a lot to the playability of the game.
- Well implemented social features!
These always-connected smartphones make it easy to hook up with other users. In P&D, you can bring other users' monsters along as helpers, who can be pretty strong dudes if you match their attributes and rank well. You also become in-game friends with the person who lent you the monster, which adds a nice social aspect to the game.
As the reviews for the iOS version indicate, this is a fun, well-made game. Though the iOS users have had quite a head start, its time for Android users to show them what we're made of!
