The English version of the originally Japanese game Be My Princess romance game was released recently. Be My Princess lets you act out romantic fantasies with 6 different princes you meet by chance at a party. The royalty bit of its story is popular with the ladies, and its unique choice of in-app purchases or a monthly subscription has made it a hit title with over 10,000 downloads.
Normally with English versions of Japanese games, they just translate the text, but Be My Princess went one step further: it actually changed the graphics as well.
Let's take a look:
That handsome but somewhat weak-looking Prince Edward is transformed into a super tough guy with rugged good looks!
So it looks like with this game, they're actually changing the character concepts between the Japanese and English versions. It's weird how little difference this makes once you've played the game for a while.
The other princes get a similar treatment...
as they change into Hollywood-y hunks of burning love!
It might seem a bit strange that they'd go this far to change the game for non-Japanese markets, but I think some of the changes are pretty good. I think the prince above and to the left is dreamy~~~
Even subcharacters get a makeover, including the old guy on the left that seems to know a bit more about the game than he lets on.
He looks a bit like Anthony Hopkins, doesn't he?
While the character graphics are different, the background music, scenery, story, and game system all remain the same. I gave the free prologue trial app a shot and it played pretty well. Having both of these apps might be a good way to practice your Japanese (or English).
After the prologue, stories for each of the individual princes cost extra, with Will and Keith versions ($3.99 per version) being the only ones available so far in English.
For those interested in this game, I urge you to try out the trial prologue.
