A traditional summertime activity in Japan is watermelon smashing. Who started this strange tradition? I've no idea. I've never been a big fan of this "game". Why does the smasher need to be blindfolded? Smashing it makes it awfully difficult to eat, doesn't it?
Sorry to start of so negatively. It's not because I've got absolutely no plans for this summer and I'm jealous. Go ahead, have your fun attacking watermelons.
That's fine. I've got this smartphone game to keep me company.
And what a game. Let me introduce you to the super-moe watermelon splitting game Watermelons, Summer, and My Sister.
The game involves smashing watermelons with everyone's favorite 2D character, Mitsuki Natsuno!
Watermelons pass along the bottom of the screen from left to right, and it's your job to flick at just the right time to smash them to bits. Get in a nice groove and you'll start racking up combos. This is one of those games that requires an extremely low amount of concentration but is still supremely addictive. It's similar in style to the previously reviewed Pansto Koujo.
The graphics are pretty basic, but the colorful explosion you get when you hit a watermelon just right certainly gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling in your stomach.
As with a lot smartphone games nowadays, this app offers the ability to post on Twitter and keeps top score rankings. This app has the basics covered, but it's kind of unfortunate that the graphics are as simple and unvaried as they are. More motions and actions for the Mitsuki-chan would probably help extend playtime.
Even if your summer calendar is completely empty, this app lets you taste some of that good ol' watermelon smashing summertime fun. It's also a lot cleaner than the real thing!
