"Mobile Mindset Study", a survey recently covered on Tabroid article, revealed 30% of smartphone users admitted that they check their phone during a meal with others. Smartphone can help communication as long as it used correctly, however often the smartphone users' behaviors are considered as impolite.
A Wall Street Journal article gives examples concerning some very common behavior among smartphone users nowadays.
- During mealtime, everyone just picks up their phone and googles away when they can't remember someone's name or some fact in a conversation
- Everyone's phones sit on the table so that there is no space left to serve the plates!
Oh, I felt like they were talking about me...
The article also suggests ideas to discourage using smartphones at the table by setting the rules such as "If you use your phone at the table, dinner is on you" or "Put seat cards to discourage tweeting, texting or calling during the meal".
Smartphones and their apps are a new technology and we are still in the middle stages of building rules and etiquettes. Just excuse yourself to others nearby you before using the smartphone.
What? You always eat alone? Well, still it's probably a lot better to stop using it for a while so you can enjoy your meal in peace... and I'm sure it's much better for your health too!
