Welcome. This review is brought to you buy someone who has never had the pleasure of actually seeing the Japanese magical girl anime, "Pretty Cure."
While it is eminently regrettable that I cannot keep up with my friends when they start discussing the latest goings-on in the Pretty Cure universe, there's no way I'm getting up early on a Sunday to watch TV. I enjoy my Saturday night drinking way too much for any of that nonsense.
Well, to get my first sense of Pretty Cure, I figured I'd go ahead and install the new Smile Pretty Cure! ABC Bangumi Koshiki Smartphone Site app. Just the name itself is a little off-putting. Let's see what the app has to offer.
Start up the app and your face is blasted with rainbows and sparkles. This is exciting.
Usually you tap this screen to start doing stuff but...
See that? That little address bar up at the top? What's that doing there? I suppose I can forgive Pretty Cure this, for they are so sparkly and cute.
I got it, so this is where you can check up on showtimes, character info, news, and theme songs and stuff. As one of the bad grown ups that can't wake up early on Sundays, this kind of info might be useful.
It looks like there are some free goodies available as well, like wallpapers and emoticons for your phone. Very important stuff. You know you want some.
Yet, as you may have expected, you've got to register to get access to these freebies. If you are a big Pretty Cure fan, you are likely already registered, but the more casual appreciators are also going to have to sign up as well.
Also, as I'm sure all you tech-savvy power users already noticed, this app just loads up the smartphone version of the Pretty Cure site. The only parts that are special to the app are its icon and the startup screen. Boo.
So it makes me think, is there really a need for an app like this? And I guess the answer is that fans of the series will be perfectly happy to download a free app just so they can have a Pretty Cure icon on their smartphone. Right?
