When you want an anime with big robots transforming and joining together to fight, Genesis of Aquarion is the one to beat.
While Genesis of Aquarion ended in 2005, a follow-up series, Aquarion Evol, was announced in 2011 and premiered on TV earlier this year. In conjunction with the TV program, the Aquarion Evol Kindan-no-gattai Catcher app has been released for Android, offering numerous ways to interact with the TV show.
With this app, you can make collections out of the characters that appear in the anime, and then use those characters to battle other players on the Aquarion Evol Kindan-no-gattai Battle gaming website.
What's really cool is how you get new characters and mechs. You actually use the mic on your phone to listen to the ending theme music of the show. You then shake the phone to get characters, and also obtain Vectors (mechs that combine to become Aquarions)
Your hanger is where all the machines you've collected are stored, making it easy and fun to manage your collection.
When your Vectors clear the requirements necessary to form an Aquarion, it's time to combine them. Once you're able to combine your Vectors, you're treated with a cool cut scene exactly like it looks in the anime. It's pretty awesome.
One problem I have with this app is that it's tough to figure out what there is to do at first. If you're not registered at the Kindan-no-gattai Battle game site, the range of things you can do with this app by itself is quite limited.
Regardless, the challenges in the app are cool and quite innovative for a smartphone app. Additional mini-games are planned for later updates, so it'll be fun seeing what the app will eventually end up like.
They're saying all the functions of the app won't be usable until July 30, 2012, but the app is still worth trying out now!
