R-TYPE, the game that swept the gaming world in the early 80's, is finally ported to Android.
R-TYPE, along with another shooting game classic Gradius, is one of the best two "shumps" of all time. Originally released in 1987, R-TYPE has built up a wonderful Sci-Fi world with organically designed game world and machines. The game is absolutely exhilarating. Some of you may still remember the excitement of rapidly firing at wave after wave of enemy ships surging toward you.
Upon the release of R-Type for Android, a free "Lite Version" of the game was released alongside the paid version. So I decide to play it on my Android phone, and relive those days of glory. Since this is a trial version, not all stages are playable. However, there are no restrictions to how you control the game. Both "Arcade Mode" and "Touch Mode" which are included in the paid version can be selected in this free version. In "Arcade Mode", the control pad is displayed at the bottom of the screen. In "Touch Mode", you can operate your vessel using the whole touch screen.
Even More Exhilarating than the Original!
Playing this game for the first time, I'd like to say this game makes use of the touch screen and offers good control. When the player swipes a finger across the screen, R-9, the player's ship traces the player's finger automatically. The smooth control feels very good. And never before has shooting down enemies with a simple swipe of fingers felt so exhilarating. Playing with "Automatic Fire Mode" on, the exhilaration doubles.
The game is well designed to take full advantage of the touch screen. Not only the size, but also the position of the on-screen control pad can be configured. The pad is available in three sizes; large, medium, and small. As for the position, you can choose either left or right. You will appreciate this function, particularly in arcade mode because the D-pad and action buttons can both be seen.
Inherent Issue with Touchscreen Gaming
The "Touch Mode" offers players a fresh experience by utilizing the whole screen with intuitive control of the ship. However your ship will sometimes be shot down because an enemy is hidden behind your fingers. This disadvantage is inherent in touchscreen games. If you want to achieve higher score, I recommend "Arcade Mode".
Also, when you swipe your fingers quickly across a multi-touchscreen, you might notice some lag. However, this is not huge problem. After all, the exhilaration you get from playing this game is addicting.
I recommend playing the Lite Version first; however, only one stage is playable in this version. In addition, the difficulty cannot be selected. It won't give you much fulfillment beating the Lite Version, so I am absolutely certain that you will end up getting the full version once you experience the exhilaration at your fingertips.
